How to Do a
Chassé

The chassé is a quick, controlled sideways movement that's an important part of many floor routines. It helps with rhythm, style, and connecting skills.

Before You Start

Make sure you have a clear space with a non-slip floor. You should be comfortable with basic movements like walking, jumping, and balancing.

Step-by-Step Guide

1Gymnast standing tall in the chassé start position

Start Position

Stand tall with your feet together, arms out to the side at shoulder height. Keep your core tight and look forward.

2Gymnast stepping to the side to begin a chassé

Step

Step to the side with your right foot or left foot, keeping your legs straight and your toes pointed.

Together

Quickly bring your other foot in to meet the first foot. Your feet should be together with straight legs.

4Gymnast stepping out to finish the chassé

Step

Step out to the side again with the same foot. This is one chassé: step, together, step. Keep moving!

☆ Practice Drills

  • Practice down a line on the floor.
  • Count out loud: “step – together – step.”
  • Start slow, then gradually go faster.
  • Try 10 chassés in a row each direction.

  • Bending your knees.
  • Not bringing your feet together.
  • Leaning forward.
  • Rushing instead of focusing on control.
