Full Turn
A clean full turn is not about spinning as fast as possible. It comes from finding a strong balance position, rising high onto relevé, keeping your body stacked over the supporting foot, using your arms with control and finishing exactly where you intended.
What Is a Full Turn?
A full turn is a complete 360-degree rotation performed around the body's vertical axis. In gymnastics, a full turn is commonly performed while balancing on one foot in relevé.
What makes a full turn challenging is that several things must happen together. You need enough rotational energy to make it all the way around, but you also need enough control to keep your body centered over a very small base of support.
The goal is not to whip yourself around and hope to stop in the right place. A polished turn should have a clear beginning, a stable turning position and a deliberate finish.
Before You Try to Turn
If balancing on one foot is difficult before you rotate, adding a full turn will only make that instability harder to control.
One-Foot Balance
Practice standing steadily on your supporting leg without letting the hip shift dramatically to the side.
Strong Relevé
You should be able to rise high onto the ball of your supporting foot and maintain that position without immediately dropping your heel.
Controlled Passé
Practice lifting the free leg into your turning position without letting the supporting leg or torso collapse.
Core Control
Keep your ribs and hips stacked rather than arching, leaning or twisting your upper body away from your supporting foot.
Your turn is only as stable as the position underneath it.
Before trying to rotate faster, make sure you can hold the turning position itself. Strong turns are built from stable shapes, not speed.
How to Do a Full Turn Step by Step
Think of your full turn as a sequence of controlled actions rather than one big spin.
Set Your Starting Position
Begin tall and organized. Your supporting foot should be placed where you can comfortably balance, and your arms should be ready to help initiate the rotation.
- Lift your chest without arching your lower back.
- Keep your abdominal muscles engaged.
- Keep your supporting knee aligned over the foot.
- Look toward the direction you plan to finish.
Prepare Through the Supporting Leg
Use a small, controlled preparation through your supporting leg. The goal is to create enough energy to rotate without making the turn wild or difficult to stop.
- Keep your hips underneath you.
- Avoid dropping your chest forward.
- Stay connected to the floor before rising.
- Keep the movement smooth rather than jerky.
Rise High Onto Relevé
Push through your supporting foot and lift your heel as high as you can while staying centered over the ball of the foot.
A low relevé creates more friction against the floor and often makes a turn feel heavy. Rising tall helps create a cleaner, smoother rotation.
- Press through the ball of the foot.
- Lift your heel high.
- Keep the supporting leg long.
- Stretch upward through the top of your head.
Bring the Free Leg Into Position
Lift your free leg into the turning position used for your skill. Keep the knee controlled rather than allowing the leg to swing around independently.
- Lift the knee with control.
- Keep your hips level.
- Maintain your supporting-leg alignment.
- Avoid letting the free knee swing wildly outward.
Rotate as One Unit
Allow your shoulders, ribs and hips to rotate together. Your body should feel stacked over the supporting foot instead of twisting in separate pieces.
- Keep your core engaged.
- Avoid letting your shoulders get far ahead of your hips.
- Keep the supporting foot underneath your center.
- Stay lifted instead of sinking during the turn.
Finish the Rotation Before Stepping Down
Complete the full 360-degree rotation and regain control before lowering your heel or stepping into your finish.
- Find your finish direction.
- Keep your chest lifted.
- Lower from relevé with control.
- Finish without extra steps when possible.

The Body Alignment Behind a Clean Turn
When a gymnast falls out of a turn, the problem often starts before the rotation itself. Check how your body is stacked from your foot upward.
Imagine a straight line running from the floor through the top of your head.
Your job is to rotate around that line without letting your hips, shoulders or head drift far away from it.
Supporting Foot
Keep your weight centered over the ball of the foot instead of rolling dramatically toward the inside or outside edge.
Supporting Leg
Keep the leg strong and lifted. A soft or collapsing supporting leg can cause the whole turn to sink.
Hips
Keep your hips underneath your torso instead of pushing one hip dramatically outward.
Shoulders
Allow your shoulders to rotate with the body instead of yanking them around before the hips can follow.
Should You Spot During a Full Turn?
Head position can affect your balance and sense of direction, so it is worth practicing deliberately instead of letting your head move randomly.
Know where you started—and where you want to finish.
During training, it can help to choose a clear point in front of you before beginning your turn. Keeping visual awareness of your starting and finishing direction may make the rotation feel more organized.
Different gymnastics turns and choreography may use the head slightly differently, so follow the technique your coach teaches for your routine. The important part is that the head remains controlled rather than being thrown backward or sideways.
Why Does My Full Turn Keep Going Wrong?
The way you fall out of a turn often gives you a clue about which part of the technique needs attention.
I only make it halfway around.
Make sure you are rising high enough and creating enough controlled rotational momentum from the beginning.
I fall toward the side.
Your hips or shoulders may be drifting away from your supporting foot. Practice holding the turn position without rotating first.
My heel drops halfway through.
Practice calf raises and relevé holds so your ankle can maintain height throughout the entire rotation.
I spin too far past the finish.
More power is not always better. Practice stopping quarter turns and half turns exactly where you planned.
My arms fly open.
Practice the arm pathway separately so your arms support the rotation instead of pulling you off balance.
I can turn, but I always step out.
Your turn is not finished until you control the landing or lowering phase. Work on completing the rotation and holding the finish.
The Full Turn Drill Ladder
Instead of immediately repeating full turns, build control in smaller pieces and add rotation only when the previous step feels stable.
Relevé Hold
Rise onto one foot and hold your turning position without rotating. Focus on height and stillness.
